Abstract

This paper interrogates the interface between African spirituality and Christian theology with a view to developing a contextual theology of the sacred. While scholars such as John Mbiti, Kwame Bediako, and Lamin Sanneh have advanced the inculturation and translation of Christian faith within African contexts, the metaphysical and aesthetic dimensions of the sacred as conceived in African spirituality and their implications for Christian thought remain insufficiently explored. This study addresses that gap by re-examining the African notion of the sacred as a holistic continuum in which divine, human, ancestral, and natural realities are interwoven, and by exploring how this worldview may illuminate Christian doctrines of incarnation, communion, and sacramentality. Employing a qualitative methodology that integrates theological hermeneutics, cultural anthropology, and comparative theological analysis, the paper draws on textual and ethnographic materials to examine resonances between African sacred cosmologies and biblical theological paradigms. The argument advances a dialogical rather than hierarchical relationship between both traditions, proposing a contextual theological framework that understands the sacred as simultaneously transcendent and immanent within African experience. The study contributes to intercultural and constructive theology, offering fresh insights into how African religious consciousness can enrich global Christian reflection and broader humanities discourse on spirituality and the sacred.
