AFRICAN TRADITIONAL RELIGION AND CULTURE IN AFRICA

Abstract

Religion heavily influences the African culture by shaping social structures, political power, economic activities, moral systems, and artistic expressions. With a focus on the African Traditional Religion (ATR) as the basis of indigenous belief systems, this study investigates the relationship between the traditional religion and the African culture, drawing on traditional, sociological and anthropological viewpoints like those of Émile Durkheim and Edward Burnett Tylor. This paper investigates the conceptual meaning of religion and culture and places African religious thought within a holistic worldview that unifies the spiritual and material worlds. It also looks at the role of religion in structuring African social institutions, evaluate the relevance and influence of religion in contemporary African society in the context of modernization and globalization and determine how religion contributes to identity formation, social cohesion, and ethical systems in African communities using historical and qualitative content analysis of aggregate data from secondary sources. This study assesses the significance of the African traditional religion in current African society and comes to the conclusion that comprehending African traditional religion is crucial to understanding the continent's social structure, historical evolution, ethical frameworks, and current changes. Recommendations made includes provision of systematic documentation and preservation for indigenous heritage, Integration of African Religious Studies into Educational Curriculum and the engagement of youth in the cultural transmission Programs among others.
