Abstract

The history of Christianity in Nigeria is often told through the activities of European missionaries, frequently downplaying the roles of local African actors who were crucial in spreading and adapting the faith. A key indigenous figure in this story is Garrick Sokari Braide, a Niger Delta prophet whose revival movement in the early twentieth century transformed the region's religious scene. This study reexamines missionary narratives by focusing on Braide’s role as an indigenous Christian leader during colonial Nigeria, especially in today’s Rivers State. Through historical and theological analysis, it investigates Braide’s prophetic work, his clashes with colonial missionary structures, and the rise of local church movements that challenged European church authority. The paper shows that Braide’s ministry marks an important moment in the Africanization of Christianity in Nigeria, as he made Christian practices relevant to local communities through native language, prophetic healing, and moral reforms. His revival movement gained large followings across the Niger Delta and helped lead to the founding of the Christ Army Church of Nigeria, one of Nigeria’s earliest African Independent Churches. The study further interrogates colonial missionary narratives that portrayed Braide as a dissident or schismatic figure and instead positions him as a catalyst for indigenous Christian agency and religious transformation. By highlighting the socio-political and cultural implications of his movement, the paper contributes to broader discussions on African religious leadership, colonial power dynamics, and the development of indigenous Christianity. Ultimately, this reassessment demonstrates that the expansion of Christianity in Nigeria cannot be fully understood without acknowledging the pivotal role played by African prophets such as Braide.
