Roles of Christian Ethics in a Dwindling Economy: The Nigerian Perspective

Abstract

The persistent economic challenges confronting Nigeria have generated widespread poverty, unemployment, corruption, insecurity, inflation, and social instability. Despite abundant natural and human resources, economic decline continues to affect the quality of life of millions of Nigerians. In such circumstances, ethical principles become essential for promoting responsible leadership, accountability, justice, and social transformation. Christian ethics, derived from biblical teachings and Christian moral traditions, provides valuable moral resources for addressing the sociolect-economic challenges of contemporary Nigeria. This paper examines the roles of Christian ethics in a dwindling economy from the Nigerian perspective. It explores the concept of Christian ethics, the nature of Nigeria's economic crisis, and the contributions of Christian ethical principles toward economic recovery and national development. Using the qualitative and review of avoidable literature. the paper argues that Christian ethics can foster integrity, social justice, accountability, diligence, compassion, and responsible stewardship, thereby contributing significantly to economic revitalization. The paper concludes that the application of Christian ethical values by individuals, institutions, religious organizations, and government leaders can promote sustainable economic growth and social stability in Nigeria.
