RELIGION, CULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT IN AFRICA

Abstract

The increasing level of environmental degradation, the frequent and intense natural disasters, pollution, global health challenges, and the spiralling effects of almost irreversible climate change have convinced many that the survival of humankind, cultures and the earth is at risk. Many people globally continue to live in poverty and are denied a life of dignity, and Africa records the highest data in all. Unemployment, particularly among the youth, has remained a major concern for policymakers across Africa. There are other challenges, which include spiralling conflict, violent extremism, terrorism, forced displacement of people due to herders/farmers clashes, the depletion of the lake Chad in Nigeria have reversed much the little development progress made in recent decades in Africa. There is no doubt that the social, economic and political upheavals have also accelerated the trend of environmental degradation in Africa.
