Abstract

The prophetic ministry of Garrick Sokari Braide (1882–1918) occupies a significant place in the history of African Christianity and the emergence of Pentecostal spirituality in West Africa. Braide, an Anglican catechist from the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, led a revival movement in the early twentieth century that transformed the religious landscape of Southern Nigeria. His ministry emphasized prophetic healing, fervent prayer, repentance, the rejection of idols, and strict moral discipline. Although his activities initially developed within Anglican structures, tensions with missionary authorities and colonial administrators eventually led to the suppression of the movement and his imprisonment. Nevertheless, Braide’s revival laid the foundation for the emergence of indigenous Christian expressions and the establishment of the Christ Army Church. This paper examines the enduring legacies of Braide in contemporary African Pentecostal movements. Using historical and analytical methods, the paper explores how Braide’s prophetic leadership, healing ministry, emphasis on spiritual power, and contextualization of Christianity within African cultural frameworks influenced later Pentecostal and Charismatic expressions across Africa. The paper argues that many defining characteristics of modern African Pentecostalism, including prophetic authority, healing and deliverance ministries, mass revivalism, and indigenous leadership can be traced to the patterns established by Braide’s revival. The study concludes that Garrick Braide’s ministry represents one of the earliest indigenous prophetic revivals in Nigeria and provides a historical bridge between missionary Christianity and contemporary Pentecostal spirituality in Africa. His legacy continues to shape African Christian identity, leadership models, and worship practices in modern Pentecostal movements.
