Political participation is a critical component of democratic governance in Nigeria. This study examined political apathy among Nigerian Christians, focusing on its causes, consequences, and implications of Christian precepts regarding political participation. Using a qualitative and analytical approach, the study draws on biblical texts, Christian ethical thought, and relevant scholarly literature to interrogate the theological, socio-political, and historical factors that shape Christian engagement in politics in Nigeria. The study identified key causes of political apathy among Christians and further demonstrated that political apathy among them weakens democratic participation, sustains unethical leadership, marginalizes Christian ethical perspectives in governance, and contributes to moral deficit in public life.
The study argues that Christian faith, properly understood, does not support political withdrawal but rather encourages responsible civic engagement grounded in justice, accountability, stewardship, and service in the promotion of the common good. It also highlights the strategic roles of the Church in addressing political apathy through civic education, ethical reorientation, and active support for peaceful political participation. The study concluded by proposing practical recommendations aimed at fostering informed ethical and sustained political engagement among Nigerian Christians as a means of strengthening democratic governance and moral leadership in Nigeria.
