THE INFLUENCE OF ISLAM ON AFRICAN CULTURE

Abstract

Islam has played a significant role in shaping African cultures since its introduction to the continent in the 7^th century. Through trade, migration, scholarship, and political expansion, Islam has influenced African societies in religious, social, economic, and cultural dimensions. This paper examines the multifaceted influence of Islam in African culture, highlighting both processes of cultural transformation and accommodation. The paper adopts a historical and analytical approach, drawing on existing literature to evaluate the extent of Islamic influence across different regions of Africa. It argues that Islam did not simply replace indigenous traditions but interacted dynamically with them leading to syncretism, adaptation, and cultural continuity.
