RELIGION, CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT IN AFRICA

Abstract

The theme of this international conference, ‘Religion, Culture and Environment in Africa’ is quite apt and timely. I presume it is designed to address one of the thorny issues of the 21st century. The aptness of the theme and the ensuing discourse has been captured by Tha-Thong [2012] in the following lines: ‘Among the crucial issues the world has to deal with in the recent times are environmental degradation and climate change’ [1-8].  Therefore, this life threatening issue of environmental crisis has tasked all disciples –Humanities, Social Sciences, Physical/Material Sciences and Biological Sciences, Engineering, Technology etc.  It has also been a general concern of political institutions, humanitarian bodies and even religious groups. The insidious consequences of environmental crisis is encompassing that an ordinary person in the street cannot ignore it. Hence, Okyere, Nkasah and Ovatt [2025], note that the crisis does not only affect the humans but also the non-humans. In their own words, ‘Not only do these impose threat to current human populations but also threaten non humans and future generation’ [12-23]. It is hoped that this conference is an attempt to providing a plausible solution and actions that will ameliorate the complex and hydra headed glitches imposed to humanity by the crisis in the ecosystem.
